I started collecting vinyls when I was 15, before I even had a record player. I was in Chatanooga when my friend and I found a record store, the first one I’ve ever been into. To be honest I don’t even remember the name of it, but I’m glad I went in.
I like collecting vinyls for numerous reasons. I love the feeling of putting on a vinyl and dancing around my room; it makes me feel free. Yes, I do this with all other music sources too and I know this sounds lame, but it’s different to me. The act of going to record stores, searching through the bins, and finding a record I want is so satisfying. It’s like any other thing that people collect: snow globes, t-shirts, keychains. It’s fun, and finding the rare ones makes it even better. I do the same with CD’s, but that can be saved for another article…
My collection is nowhere near as big as I want it to be yet, but I’m happy with what I have so far and hope to add more records to it for the rest of my life.
“Babel” – Mumford and Sons
This was the first record I ever bought, at that store in Chatanooga mentioned above.
The rest are not in order of when I bought them because I honestly have no memory of the exact order in which I purchased or received them.
“Spreading Rumours” – Grouplove
I do remember that I received this from my friend Ciara for Christmas one year. She’s the same friend I bought my first vinyl with, so we have given each other a couple. She’s also the person that bought me my first record player which I am still grateful for.
“Let It Be”, “Hey Jude”, “The Beatles” aka the White Album, “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club” – The Beatles
All of these records were gifts from my grandmother and I will forever cherish them. The Beatles are classic, and I already know if I ever get married, I’m walking down the aisle to a song by them which will remain unnamed for now because I doubt anyone cares anyways and I’m selfish.
“By The Way” – Red Hot Chili Peppers
This is honestly one of top 5 favorite albums, so this record is definitely one of my most played. I got this as a Christmas present from my mother.
“Acid Rap” – Chance the Rapper
I showed the actual vinyl for this record just because it’s one of the more unique ones I have. I LOVE unique colored vinyls and this marble type pattern is so cool, especially for Acid Rap. This was a present from my best friend Marci and I’ll honestly never get over how cool it is.
“Unknown Pleasures” – Joy Division
This is one of my favorite album covers so I really wanted to get this album on vinyl. I got this from Criminal Records in Little 5 Points.
“Language & Perspective” – Bad Suns
This is another one that was a gift. I fell in love with this band after seeing them open for The 1975 and this is my favorite album by them (even though they only have 2).
The Lumineers self-titled album
This album is so soothing and classy, I love it.
“Favourite Worst Nightmare” – The Arctic Monkeys
I don’t know where I got this record but I know it’s one of my favorite album titles ever. I’m not sure why except for the fact that it’s an oxymoron. It also has some of my favorite Arctic Monkey’s songs.
Drowners self-titled album
I bought this when I saw the Drowners perform at the Masquerade in Atlanta. That was my first show there. My friend Ciara and I got to meet the opening act, Bully, while buying this so I’ll always remember it.
“Talon of the Hawk” – The Front Bottoms
I bought this off Amazon (I think?) back when I was really into The Front Bottoms. I don’t really listen to them anymore but I can’t bring myself to get rid of this because I still like the songs and the memories associated with them. Plus, even though I’m not a huge fan anymore, I’m excited to see them again at Bonnaroo so I listen every now and then!
“Wincing the Night Away” – The Shins
I love this album, I love this band. My dad is really into them and introduced them to me at a young age, and this has to be my favorite album by them. I also bought this record from Criminal Records.
The “Sex” EP and “The 1975” – The 1975
I believe I bought both of these albums from their website, but I’m not quite sure. I got their self-titled album first, and I love that it’s clear. Later, I bought the Sex EP because it has my favorite bonus songs, and I just really really wanted the song “Milk” on vinyl. It’s my favorite song to dance to in my room by myself. The Sex EP came in a milky white color, which of course I love.
“Ultraviolence”- Lana Del Rey
This was another gift from Ciara, but this one is kind of cool because she bought it while she was in Scotland. Even though it’s not souvenir-esque, it’s definately one of my favorite souvenirs.
“The Balcony” – Catfish and the Bottlemen
This is definitely one of my favorite albums ever, and one of my favorite bands. I got this off Amazon. I really want their newest album “The Ride” on vinyl. It’ll probably be my next record purchase.
“Led Zeppelin II” and “The Song Remains the Same” – Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin II was another vinyl that was given to me by my grandmother. It has some of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs: “Whole Lotta Love” and “Thank You” and so many other good songs like “Ramble On”. I bought The Song Remains the Same in a cute record store in downtown Nashville. It’s the movie soundtrack from the band’s concert film of the same title and it has a lot of their classic songs.
“Cage the Elephant”, “Thank You Happy Birthday”, “Melophobia”, “Tell Me I’m Pretty” and the “Shivers” LP – Cage the Elephant
So, of course, I have every vinyl record of every album from my favorite band. I got Melophobia first, and then the rest all at once shortly after. I wanted the full collection. The Shivers LP is one of my most prized possessions. For those that don’t know “Shivers” is actually the same song as “Right Before My Eyes”. It’s the acoustic version though, which is my favorite and can also be found as a hidden track during their song “Flow”.
“MTV Unplugged in New York” – Nirvana
I love having this on vinyl. It’s a live album Nirvana recorded as part of MTV Unplugged. The sound is so raw and hearing it play on my record player just makes me happy.
The next two pictures are both Rolling Stones but they wouldn’t fit into one picture. This is the last of my vinyl collection and these were all given to me by my grandmother. I hope you enjoyed getting a look into my collection so far, and if not thanks for reading this far anyways. 🙂
“Let It Bleed”, “Tattoo You”, “Their Satanic Majesties Request”
“Black and Blue”, “Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out!” (live album)” and “Sticky Fingers”
